Bugged Out London: On Manoeuvres

Date posted - Wednesday 21. January 2009 11:30
Many thanks to everyone that came to the last Bugged Out at The End making it one of our most memorable parties ever. Justice, Erol, JoJo, Matt, Brendan, Hannah, Severino, Skull Juice, Brendan and the Black Rabbit crew: we salute you! We will miss this club so much, it’s been our favourite place to party and our longest running residency yet. But as one door shuts, several more open. This is Bugged Out’s fifteenth year and we are throwing numerous special parties across London to celebrate. We also have a new, improved website launching soon and a podcast and video recorded at the last End. Between now and the end of May we are holding parties in Fire (where we celebrated NYE), Area (Fire’s sister club), Matter (Mixmag’s club of the year), Cable (a new club opening near London Bridge) and a warehouse in Southwark. Here are some dates for your diaries for Spring…

The Last Bugged Out at The End

Date posted - Saturday 03. January 2009 12:58
With much blubbing and hanky filling we have come to the end of our residency at The End. We’ve had some amazing nights there since we laid down our hat in 2002. Who can forget Erol Alkan’s four year residency in the lounge; the nights curated by Tiga (featuring Altern 8!), Hot Chip (featuring Noze!) and Erol (featuring Boys Noize second London appearance!), Dexter from the Avalanches (remember them?), Thomas Bangalter! (actually he had an ear infection and couldn’t come), Mylo live at the tenth birthday, Miss Kittin’s all singing/all spinning sets, JoJo De Freq’s late night magic, Ivan Smagghe in the lounge and main room, Lindstrom, Vitalic and Digitalism’s live sets…God there are loads of happy memories (and so many happy blurs). It has been such a joy to put nights on there and we will miss all associated with it.

Simian Mobile Disco Christmas party

Date posted - Monday 01. December 2008 14:26
James Ford and Jas Shaw draw another successful Simian year to a close with an intimate Christmas party with their pals at Shoreditch’s East Village club. Though their schedule is always hectic (this year has seen them release Sample & Hold, Clock E.P, a Fabric Live compilation, festival tour, sold out Astoria gig and Ford even found time to produce and bang skins for Last Shadow Puppets) they have kept December 12th free to mix records and mix drinks. Joining them in the club for a glass of egg nog are tour dj’s Nadia Ksaiba and Tom Maddicott with Simon Baker whose remix of Sleep Deprivation featured on Sample & Hold. Oli Isaacs from This Is Music and Johnno from Bugged Out play pop in the bar. “I’m a hustler baby, so buy me a present. No socks though eh?”

Tiga interview! Tiga party this Thursday at The End

Date posted - Monday 01. December 2008 14:04
This is to be your last gig at The End before it closes. Will you share some memories with us about your past gigs there?

My first memory of the club is hearing the name The End and thinking, ‘Oh that's clever’. I had booked Mr C and Layo over the years in Montreal, and was excited about this new concept club. It seemed to be THE 90's club. I think I played Trash about four times, and probably another six shows, and I never had a lame gig. My best memories are the Trash nights. Very exciting times, meeting Erol, Erol's cousin, and Erol's friend who would roll the joints. I tested lots of tracks over the years, and the reception was consistently ACCURATE. Top night was Sexor release party with Altern 8, and then I think I passed out in the coatcheck with YOU of all people (Actually, I came to wake you up with a reviving ginger beer so you could finish off the party– Johnno). I also met Pet Shop Boys in the backroom. In general, over the past seven years The End was our home in London.

What have you planned for this Mind Dimension party? Is the name of this party and the name of your new single in any way related?

You mean OTHER than the fact that they have the same name? What I have planned is to show up, with Matt Walsh, and play all my best new records. Including several from my new album, which will be world exclusives. The name itself just refers to the fact that I am primarily concerned with the dimension that exists in my own head.

Bugged Out at The End July 26th

Date posted - Monday 07. July 2008 16:52
Ring ring.
"Hello?"
It's Bugged Out and we're back at The End on July 26th.
"Oh, Ok thanks for letting me know. I'll see you there."
Hang on, don't you want to know who is playing?
"Go on then, I was coming anyway as it's usually rather good."
Felix Da Housecat returns to the Bugged Out fold for the first time in aaaaages. Did you like his album last year? Underrated we thought.
"Yep, I liked it, especially Radio. Black pop innit."
He's returned to what he's best at dj-wise: playing techno.
"Great! So no Nirvana records then."
Unlikely mate. Have you heard his Global Underground mix? It's well tech. It's got JoJo De Freq's Saturn Returns on. She's playing too.
"Cool, I just downloaded her new track Brutality, Religion and a Beat. It's bostin'."
Brendan Long and Dekker from Apocalypso are also in the main room.
"Solid chaps both."
We're going disco, post funk and avant pop in the lounge with Severino from Horse Meat Disco, Nadia Ksaiba and Stopmakingme from Go Bang.
"Horse Meat Disco? Stopmakingme? What kind of names are they?"
Good ones.
"True."
And we're very excited to announce that the Black Rabbit crew will be joining us in AKA at every Bugged Out this year. Shane Watcha will be joining Bones and Guy Williams for some techno disco. Or Tesco as we call it.
"That reminds me, I've got to get some shopping in. I'm out of Broccoli."
Right. See you on July 26th.
"Yup".
Click.  The End, 18 West Central St, London, WC1. 10pm-7am. £17/£12 NUS/£15 advance/£10 AKA only.

BUGGED OUT AT SANKEYS FRIDAY OCTOBER 12TH

Date posted - Tuesday 02. October 2007 12:01
After an ace return last month with Ivan Smagghe and Tomas Andersson we head back to Sankeys for another session and we are rubbing our knees with excitement at the line up. Performing live is Uffie who makes her Manchester debut alongside producer DJ Feadz. Uffie now has a brace of hip hop bangers under her belt including Hot Chick, Ready to Uff and Party (which appears on the Justice album). Feadz will also be djing, scratching up techno, house and distorted dance. Making his Bugged Out debut is fast rising star Kissy Sell Out who has gone from doing bedroom remixes of Joy Division and Libertines to tweaking official tunes for Gwen Stefani and Mark Ronson in the space of a year. His debut single Her is to come out on Sinden’s Counterfeet label and he’s also bagged himself a monthly slot on Radio 1 to play his ravesome mix of party techno. According to his MySpace he has also just bought some Van Morrison off ebay (hope he leaves that at home)…

BUGGED OUT BIRTHDAY AT THE END SATURDAY OCTOBER 20TH

Date posted - Thursday 27. September 2007 08:19
It’s been quite the year for Bugged Out (we’re in our teens now!) with albums out by Simian Mobile Disco and Klaxons, our first Classics compilation and nights that have seen us return to our birthplace, Sankeys in Manchester and also throw parties with Hot Chip, Ed Banger, Tiga (an unforgettable Monday night) as well as a few warehouse revues (as we like to call ‘em). On October 20th we return to our London home of The End to celebrate our birthday.
Boys Noize is also launching his debut album from the night. Oi Oi Oi is party techno at it’s best and features his hits Don’t Believe The Hype and & Down. Alex Ridha certainly knows how to put the ‘oi’ in noize! Come and find out why Tiga says “Boys Noize records have saved my life as a DJ” and Erol Alkan calls him “the most exciting producer of the year”. Simian Mobile Disco are having an amazing 2007. Their debut album Attack, Decay, Sustain, Release featuring It’s The Beat and Sleep Deprivation has been a big hit and their remixes for Klaxons and Bjork amongst the best things they’ve done. Their Bugged Out Suck My Deck came out in April and featured vintage house and artists like Para One, James Holden, Switch and also JoJo De Freq who is also playing in the main room tonight. JoJo is currently remixing Miss Kittin’s new release and working on some great new material which should be ready to hear on the night! From Turbo recordings comes D.I.M who will be playing live, his Airbus Baby record has been a staple at our club since Erol first aired in back in January. Matt Walsh, who warms up, recently did a mix for Turbo after wowing Tiga when he played with him at the Bugged Out night at the T Bar in May…

A BUGGED OUT MIX BY KLAXONS OUT OCT 1ST

Date posted - Tuesday 18. September 2007 15:54
Bugged Out are pleased to announce that our next Bugged Out Mix has been compiled by Klaxons and is out on Oct 1st. CD1 is A Bugged Out Mix and is the kind of dj set you would hear if Jamie Reynolds were to take to the decks of a club at 2am featuring lots of trippy techno from Johannes Heil, Da Boogieboys and Luke Vibert. It also features Justice’s ‘Stress’ and some vintage Chemical Brothers (It Doesn’t Matter from 1997’s Dig Your Own Hole, one of their first Electronic Battle Weapons). The mix concludes with an exclusive, unreleased mix of Klaxons Not Over Yet by Brodinski which is spliced with some spoken word ramblings from one of the bands formative influences Aleister Crowley. The Bugged In Selection is a fascinating insight into the band and what music makes them tick. Sixties psych, art rock and odd guitar pop are segued with Blur, Roy Orbison, Todd Rundgren, Liars, Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons and Wu Tang Clan all featured. BUGGED OUT WAREHOUSE REVUE SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 15TH

Date posted - Thursday 30. August 2007 08:47
The third Bugged Out Warehouse Revue this year takes place on Saturday September 15th. The venue is probably the best we have used yet (it’s a two-tier car park space in EC2) and a particularly boomin’ system has been ordered. Heading up the line up is Andrew Weatherall and this is the first time he’s played an East End warehouse do in AGES. Playing live is Tomas Andersson, best known for his Washing Up but this year we feel he has eclipsed that monster with the ace Mot Matsalen. We’re also excited about welcoming new Parisian boy wonder Brodinski after hearing his Bad Runner and Klaxons mixes. Mikki Most from Trailer Trash will be warming things up. Don’t miss our third and final revue of the year, it’s looking like being the best yet! Advance tickets

BUGGED OUT RETURNS TO SANKEYS ON FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 14TH

Date posted - Thursday 30. August 2007 08:46
Bugged Out is back in its spiritual home of Sankeys, Manchester on Friday September 14th with another stellar bill. One of our all time favourite dj’s Ivan Smagghe is heading up the party, the ex-Black Strobe dude is the master of hypnotic, dark electro techno. Playing live is Tomas Andersson from B-Pitch Control, best known for Washing Up though this year we feel he has eclipsed this with the ace Mot Matsalen, long time Bugger James Holroyd will be warming things up – don’t miss him, he’s on top form. Swedish mutant disco don Headman is playing the upstairs room alongside Naïve Melody’s Slippery People. Coming up soon in Manchester: Uffie & Feadz, Kissy Sell Out, Paul ‘Phones’ Epworth, Mylo and The Glimmers.

BUGGED OUT DJ COMP

Date posted - Wednesday 29. August 2007 18:43
PLAY AT BUGGED OUT’S BIRTHDAY! Last year we ran a competition to 'win a dj set in the lounge' at our birthday night at The End. Last year Skull Juice won and they warmed up for Erol Alkan in fine style. Matt Walsh was the runner up. Both have played for Bugged Out a few times this year with Matt warming up for Tiga in May and Skull Juice will be playing with Miss Kittin in Dec. So we are running the competition again to play an hour set in the lounge on Oct 20th. You will get V.I.P tickets for a couple of mates and also free drinks all night (hope you like Vimto). All you have to do is submit a link of a 45 minute mix to charlotte@buggedout.net or send a c.d to Charlotte Hotham, Bugged Out, 2nd floor, 202 City Road, London, EC1V 2PH and cross your fingers. We need 'em by the end of September. The most inventive, interesting mixes that avoid the obvious will swiftly rise to the top!

FIELD DAY

Date posted - Monday 13. August 2007 15:55
Thank you for attending our first Field Day. Hands up, we got swamped. sorry. It was our first festival and there were clearly too many queues. We did not oversell the event and the numbers of all toilets and bars were approved by the council. However we clearly didn't anticipate the demands on the bars from a Field Day crowd and it clearly wasn't anywhere near enough. Next year we will be at least doubling both bar and toilets. We feel very disapointed about these problems and hope that it didn't affect your enjoyment of the music and other activities too much. thank you once again for attending the first Field Day, we will improve. Field Day collective.

We’ve got a line up that’s hotter than July – and as it actually is July too, it’s going to be double hot. Scorching even. Erol Alkan has been going festival crazy of late (and studio crazy producing Mystery Jets and Late of the Pier) so it’s good to welcome him back into the more intimate confines of a club and the main room of The End (which he knows inside out having played it over 300 times). The blonde boy wonder Riton unschackles himself from the Gucci Soundsystem to play solo. He’s recently mixed the first ‘We Love…’ compilation and has been doing so many ‘re-rubs’ (Simian Mobile Disco, Datarock, Para One etc) that’s he’s got a MySpace site devoted to ‘em (ritonrerub). The Ed Banger dude everyone flipped over the most from the party we threw in April happened to be Feadz. Thrill! To his incredible skills as he scratches up electro, hip hop and house. Don’t! Ask ‘Where’s yer bird?’ Nottingham’s finest synth rogues the Riotous Rockers join the noisy main room action. In the lounge we welcome Pilooski, another young Parisian, who has been so busy editing vintage soul and the like that he’s got a MySpace site devoted to ‘em (pilooskiedits). You may have heard the one he’s done of Frankie Valli’s ‘Beggin’ You’ as it’s all over the radio at the moment and also out on 679 records (if you still buy music with actual money). From Milan Crookers make their Bugged Out debut too, we’ve been loving their remixes of Nelly Furtado, Brodinski and BOTH of their mixes of ‘The Cat’ by Dusty Kid. We also welcome back Matt Walsh who warmed up for Tiga at the T Bar in May (some people actually thought he WAS Tiga) and from All You Can Eat we welcome the first dj we have booked with punctuation in their name: Naomi// (check her latest chart at myspace.com/_naomi) . Over in AKA serving up techno and house the Bump boys Gavin ‘Machine Ate My Homework’ Herlihy and Craig ‘Shrinkage’ Torrance are joined by Simon Baker.

BUGGED OUT AT THE END, SATURDAY MAY 19TH

Date posted - Thursday 03. May 2007 10:54
The summer is about to get hotter with another installment of Bugged Out at The End on Saturday May 19th. And the line up is designed to fry. Fresh from putting the finishing touches to the long awaited debut from Black Strobe is Farringdon’s most esteemed French man Ivan Smagghe. Finally making his Bugged Out debut is talented and prolific Swede John Dahlback who records as Hugg (with Pepp) and Huggotron (I wonder if he’s as tactile as his pseudonyms infer). After the success of Saturn Returns resident JoJo De Freq moves in for some main room action with Brendan Long (listen out for his remix of Justin Robertson’s Pylon Theory). In the lounge Radioclit bring their Upper Cuts, ghetto pop (and unique beard); Duke Dumont makes his debut whose first releases (other than that ace Missy Elliot MP3) will come out through Tiga’s Turbo and Skull Juice (who played our birthday last year) and Casper C of Bloggers Delight round up rogues corner. We’re doing cartwheels at the prospect of the Trailer Trash kids taking over AKA with the full squad - Hannah Holland, Mikki Most and Mr Cormac - and guest Tommy Four Seven, bringing in their nasty electro booty shake from the east end. As the good Duke would say, “Lean and bounce!”

BUGGED OUT AT SANKEYS, MANCHESTER FRIDAY MAY 11TH

Date posted - Monday 30. April 2007 12:56
Bugged Out! are back at Sankeys with another line up to make you flip your lid. Heading up the main room is the B-pitch controller Ellen Allien. Not only does Ellen run our favourite label (B-pitch, home to Tomas Andersson, Kiki, Feadz, Sascha Funke, tons more), she put out one of our favourite records last year (‘Way Out’) and is a super smart DJ playing melodic hypnotic techno. She makes her own clothes too which you can also buy from her website. Let’s all dress up like total B-pitches! Fresh from the success of her first release on Mythic ‘Saturn Returns’ JoJo De Freq herself returns after being a real hit back in February. Sinden is resident of Get Familiar at Fabric with Switch and was also the main dj at Basement Jaxx’s Inside Out parties. Expect fidget rave, baile funk and mutant pop. Watch this chap, he’s gonna be big. Original Bugger James Holroyd and the Slippery People geezers from Naïve Melody join in the fun. Good times are here again.

Before Bugged Out! we will be screening a special concert film in the club. Doors open at 8pm for the international film premiere of The Knife live in concert in Gothenburg. The Knife’s ‘Silent Shout’ album has been hailed as a modern masterpiece drawing comparisons from Bjork, Kraftwerk and Aphex Twin. You may have also heard their music on the dancefloor though perhaps remixed by Trentemoller (We Share Our Mothers Health), Thomas Schumacher (Like A Pen) or Rex The Dog (Heartbeats). The Knife have only played live a handful of times – every performance has been a much anticipated event - and the film features visuals by Andreas Nilsson which brings to life the full stunning audio/visual spectacle of The Knife in concert.

Don’t miss this unique opportunity. Entrance is free!
